Overview

Doors and Frames

The safety, security and welfare of staff and inmates are enhanced by detention hollow metal construction. In a typical bar-grille cell front, an inmate does not only have access to all hardware, but also has opportunities to abuse or injure a staff member or other inmates by throwing objects or bodily fluids, or by grabbing them through the bars. Visibility to these incidents is reduced in a hollow metal assembly. However, incorporating security glass, perforated plate, wire mesh screen or grille, (or any combination of these options), into a hollow metal door or frame can provide adequate visibility for the stafff. Cell fronts can be designed using sidelight frames for better visibility into cells.

Because of the insulation-filled construction of doors in detention facilities, the noise level is reduced, if not completely eliminated. If an inmate decides to beat or kick the cell front, he will only create a dull and thudding noise.  Also, the full grouted hands and mullions are highly effective for noise control.
